Staying on Track: Week 3

By: George Verdolaga Building Your Brand, Career & Business, Change, Goals 1 Comment Mar 12, 2015

HikingHave you ever had to balance two things like your career and a relationship and have one of them end in disaster because you found it hard to juggle several things all at once?

I’m at the end of week 2 of my book writing project. So far I’ve finished writing another 21,666 words for my second chapter and put in 12 hours of writing time compared to 10 hours last week where I produced 18,649 words for chapter one.

How did I manage not to quit, despite the demands of my business and personal life?

1. Keep the end in mind – If you’ve got an ambitious goal, the quickest way to get there is to stay focused and motivate yourself daily by imagining the rewards you’d get by achieving it. For me, I thought about how happy I’d be to get back two hours of sleep a day after I finish writing the first draft of this book in 3 more weeks. I also thought about the many people I’d be able to help and inspire by sharing my stories that saw me go from an obscure outsider to an influential thought leader.

2. Be accountable – If you tell other people about your plans, they may either offer to help or they might discourage you out of “concern”. I’d ignore the second types and just spend time with the supportive ones. Once I announced that I was writing a book to several people last December, I knew that they’d be periodically asking me how my book was coming along. I didn’t want to let them down. So I decided to share my progress to keep me accountable and to prevent me from getting sidetracked or quitting.

What about you? Do you have any regrets from the past about things that you wish you’d finished? You’re free to start over again and finally finish something that you’ve begun. Just make sure to recruit supporters to cheer you until you reach the finish line. And steer clear of doubters and hecklers in the meantime.
